Cancer is a generic term for a large group of disease that can affect any part of the body.Cancer arises from a change in one single cell. The transformation from a normal cell into a tumor cell is a multistage process, typically a progression from a pre-cancerous lesion to malignant tumors. These changes are the result of the interaction between a person’s genetic factor and external agents.

Risk Factors

  • Gender

    Men can develop breast cancer, but it is 100 times more common among women than men.

  • Age

    Risk of developing breast cancer increases with age.

  • Genetic Risk Factors

    5% to 10% of breast cancer cases are hereditary as a result of gene changes. If you have inherited mutated genes ( BRCA1 & BRCA 2 ) from a parent, you are at increased risk for breast cancer.

  • Family history of breast cancer

    Risk of developing breast cancer is increased if your mother, grandmother, sister or daughters have breast or ovarian cancer. Woman with a family history of breast cancer in a father or brother also have an increased of breast cancer.

  • Menstrual Periods

    Women who started menstruation before age 12 or who went through menopause after 55 have slightly higher risk of breast cancer.

  • Oral contraceptive pills

    Women using oral contraceptives have a slightly higher risk of breast cancer than who have never used them.

  • Breast Feeding

    Lowers the risk of breast cancer.

  • Women who have no children

    Are at risk of breast cancer compared to women who have children. This risk is evident after age 40 to 45 years, but not for breast cancer diagnosed at younger age.

  • First child birth late in life

    First child after age 30 have a slightly higher breast cancer risk.

  • Postmenopausal hormone use

    Increases risk of breast cancer.

  • Alcohol

    Consumption of alcohol increases risk of developing breast cancer.

  • Obesity

    increases risk of breast cancer, especially in postmenopausal women.
