BREAST SELF EXAMINATION
The most important thing of breast self examination is to become familiar with your breast and distinguish between normal and abnormal changes in breast. In other words, every woman should know that how her breasts look and feel normally.
Breast self examination should be done by every woman, beginning at the age of 20, once a month.
Instructions
To look for any change in your breast, stand in front of a mirror and raise both arms over your shoulders and examine bothbreasts for any change in shape or size of the breast or nipple.
Examine your breast in the shower. Sometimes it is easy to feel for any lump or swelling when skin is wet and soapy.
Now keep your hands on your waist and press firmly, to flex your chest muscles, and look for retraction of nipple, dimpling of skin.
Examine your breast in lie down position. If you are examining your right breast, then right arm should be behind your head and place pillow under right shoulder. Keep the fingers of the left hand close to each other and press right breast firmly using pads of the fingers, in a circular or vertical motions covering the whole breast to feel for any thickening, lumps or swelling.
Similarly, examine your left breast in lie down position in the same manner.
Squeeze nipple, to look for discharge and nodule.
Examine your breast while standing and don’t forget to look for any lumps or swelling in armpit.
Never feel the breast in between the finger tips and the thumb during breast examination.
If you find any thickening, lumps or swelling in breast or armpit, discharge from nipple then always consult a surgeon to confirm your findings.

CLINICAL BREAST EXAMINATION
Clinical breast examination is performed by a doctor preferably every three years from ages 20-39. After age 40, women should have a clinical breast examination by a doctor every year. This is the most effective and easiest way of diagnosing breast cancer.

MAMMOGRAM
- Mammogram is an x- ray of the breast.
- It is done in two views of each breast.
- For each view breast is compressed between two plates, up to 15-16 pound pressure to flatten the breast and achieve good film.
- It is safe and requires very low levels of radiation.
- Digital mammogram comes immediately on computer screen.
- American cancer society recommends mammogram every year for women age 40 or older as long as they are in good health.
